Eddy Current Detection Principle

Eddy current testing refers to a non-destructive testing method that uses the principle of electromagnetic induction to non-destructively evaluate certain properties of conductive materials and their workpieces or discover defects by measuring changes in induced eddy currents in the inspected workpiece. In industrial production, eddy current testing is one of the main means to control the quality of various metal materials and a few non-metallic conductive materials such as graphite and carbon fiber composite materials and their products. It occupies an important position in the field of non-destructive testing technology.

Eddy current detection method

Eddy current testing is to bring a conductor close to a coil with alternating current, and the coil establishes an alternating magnetic field. The alternating magnetic field passes through the conductor and generates electromagnetic induction with it, creating eddy currents in the conductor. The eddy currents in the conductor will also produce their own magnetic field. The effect of the eddy current magnetic field changes the strength of the original magnetic field, which in turn leads to changes in the coil voltage and impedance. When defects appear on the surface or near the surface of a conductor, the intensity and distribution of eddy currents will be affected. The changes in eddy currents will in turn cause changes in the voltage and impedance of the detection coil. Based on this change, the existence of defects in the conductor can be indirectly known.
