Ultrasonic testing

Due to the difference in the acoustic characteristics of the object material and its internal discontinuities (defects), when ultrasonic waves are encountered during the propagation of the object, an emission phenomenon will occur. By recording the time and energy changes of the reflected echo, the internal quality of the object can be evaluated. The advantage of ultrasonic testing is that it is easy to carry and is not restricted by the operating environment. It is especially suitable for the detection of thicker products and area-type defects.

Ultrasonic testing can be divided into pulse reflection ultrasonic testing (UT), time-of-flight diffraction ultrasonic testing (TOFD) and phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT). Among them, TOFD determines the size of defects through the time difference of endpoint diffraction signals, which has higher measurement accuracy than conventional UT; PAUT scans defects through focused sound beam scanning imaging, which can better determine the location, shape and size of defects than conventional UT.
